A little flash of fiction!
Suvivor
I had sailed so close to the wind that I could still feel the chill down my spineless back. Allan fixed his gaze on me, determined and pressing. I thought I had made up my mind, but maybe it wasn’t actually my decision to make. I wondered if it had ever been in my hands. I had once thought I couldn’t bear to watch the boredom of a predictable future roll out as Buzz Light Year once said ‘to infinity and beyond’
Whilst I’d been eating strawberry pavlova from someone else’s spoon, whilst I’d been shamelessly sipping my wine and feeling like a 16yr old, Allan had been shouldering our burden. Of course, I would have been there but he couldn’t contact me, I’d switched my mobile phone to silent and left it tucked somewhere between breath freshening mints and handy handbag size tissues.
That was when I learned nothing stays the same, nothing is truly predictable and no one can touch infinity or beyond, well, except maybe Buzz Light Year.
Lifting the plastic bag, I feel it stretch and bounce as I hand over the rotting corpse, concealed amongst the lace bras and little black dresses. The woman in the charity shop receives my past and smiles gratefully and I think I recognise something in her watery violet eyes and I wonder if she’s a survivor too.
